The moment I arrived in San Miguel at Dominga Chavez’s house she hugged me and accepted me. I lived in Guanacaste for 6 months and took Spanish classes from Carlos. Staying at Dominga’s house was incredibly beneficial for my Spanish. I loved being able to run outside of Dominga’s house with my surfboard and swim out on the waves. Sometimes at sunrise or sunset I would just sit out there on my surfboard and pray. I will always treasure these moments.

Language classes were creative and relevant, further assisting me in my work in local environmental issues and better preparing me for the next year of graduate school. The remote location provided a true escape from the constant buzz and busyness of life in the States, and there is nothing quite like watching the sun set after a rain storm in Costa Rica. I am so very grateful for my time in San Miguel, and for the wonderful people who have worked so hard to create a welcoming and unassuming space that was critical to my healing and renewed faith.

My husband is from Western Canada and I am from the Eastern US. Though my husband had studied Spanish and lived 2 years in Latin America before contracting with Carlos, I never studied any language (other than English) before we went to Costa Rica. Yet today as I sit here, it is difficult to write of Don Carlos M. Quesada Bonilla without thinking in Spanish. Carlos’ oversight of our language acquisition honed and refined our grasp of Spanish use in everyday life. The patience he exhibits and clarity with which he speaks made learning much easier than I ever thought it would be, in part because he tailors his content to each individual. He is quick to discern who you are and customizes the lessons to your personal interests. I would highly recommend Carlos as a Spanish Teacher. (No one in North America suspects that old “gringos” like us know Spanish as well as we do!)

I was so fortunate to have a chance to participate in lessons led by Carlos during my time in San Miguel, Costa Rica. I loved the method the school used which involved utilizing relevant conversations to build on the Spanish I already knew and tailoring lessons to my individual skill level. I appreciated that I was encouraged to speak only in Spanish during lessons to overcome hurdles as they came, which is how it is when using the Spanish language out in the real world. I also enjoyed the creative mix each lesson held where we would listen to and translate music and write journal entries in Spanish on our own. With these methods and Carlos’ patient and humorous teachings, I was able to improve my Spanish in the time I had with him. The lessons greatly enhanced my time in Costa Rica—not only did I get to spend time with the kind people at Carlos’ home, but I was better able to speak to friends in San Miguel. I highly recommend this school, es muy bueno!

I would recommend Pacific Learning Center to anyone who wants to learn and improve their Spanish language skills. My Spanish knowledge was limited when I arrived in Costa Rica to work, but the classes I took with Carlos greatly improved my language skills and helped me to communicate with the local community. Carlos and Mary are both very kind and professional teachers and a pleasure to be around.
I started studying Spanish in High School and was fascinated with the language. I was given the privilege of going to Costa Rica for a year of Spanish study. It could have been your typical school that offers grammar, pronunciation, conversation etc. But there was an added method which shot me ahead of the average students of Spanish. I was challenged to develop a route of people that I could visit several times a week. I would prepare short paragraphs or questions to ask and receive information to broaden my understanding of the language and culture. I loved how it connected me to people. They knew that they were my teachers. And who doesn’t feel good about helping others. They feel like an expert or teacher for a few minutes of their day. No matter how shy you are, I would challenge everyone to do it. It breaks down so many barriers. And then the other benefit was that even though I would not stay in Latin America, the method continued to work when I came to Spain. I could learn how to change over to Spain Spanish after probably only a year. Now they can’t tell where I learned my Spanish. J And because they knew where I was headed, they personalized my studies to include movies and books that would prepare me for my needs and destination. I hope many will get this opportunity if they are desiring to master the wonderful language of Spanish!
I took classes from Carlos twice a week for three months while living in Costa Rica. I used to believe that I was hopeless at learning new languages, but after classes with Carlos, I know that I was wrong! I have never learned material faster than I did with Carlos. His teaching methods were much more conversational and practical than classes I have taken in the past. Each lesson built upon the previous ones in such an intuitive way that as a student, I could literally feel myself improving class to class. After every lesson, I left feeling both challenged and proud of my improvement. I also left with the confidence and tools to continue practicing at home. The homework always appropriately reinforced and built upon the lessons. Carlos moved quickly and challengingly through material, but he did so in a gentle, encouraging and understanding way. It can feel very vulnerable to be a language learner, but after a few lessons with Carlos, I found myself more willing to take risks, make mistakes, and most of all, laugh and have fun while I did it!

My husband and I studied with Carlos as our teacher in Costa Rica before we went to work in Mexico. It was an incredible learning experience. Carlos is a very creative and makes learning fun, using music, poetry, literature, and games to improve our study. No only did we learn in class but also from community experiences and tourist trips outside of the city. Carlos also helped us learn about the Latin culture, and he became our good friend. I highly recommend Carlos and his school for your Spanish studies.

From January to August, 1990, Lisa and I were students in Costa Rica. We had both formal classes, and informal classes with tutors. By far, the best teacher and tutor I ever had was Carlos Quesada. We spent a lot of time together, in the classroom and out on the streets and in our home. He spoke only Spanish to me, and I appreciate his kind discipline in obligating me and Lisa to become more fluent in Spanish. I learned way more from Carlos about conversational Spanish, comprehension, and verbal expression, while we were hanging out together, traveling and playing sports together, than I ever learned in the classroom. He took extra time to talk, listen and share, and he explained Hispanic culture to us as well as basic, intermediate and advanced communication. Since Carlos is fluent in Spanish, English and other languages, he knows how to help me and Lisa go from where we were and get to a higher level of fluency and communication. Carlos is the best I've ever seen in this area! We were extremely blessed to know him and be taught by him. Any student would benefit greatly from his tutelage.
If you desire to begin communicating in Spanish from day one, the Pacific Learning Center is the place for you. Carlos Quesada is an innovative instructor who will have you speaking and perfecting the language regardless of your proficiency level. I studied with Carlos for eight months, he not only taught me the proper grammar, phonics, and syntax, but also what brings life to language, the colloquial sayings that will endear you. My wife Karen and I moved from Costa Rica to Chile and continued to consult Carlos on the specific nuances. We fell in love with the culture and the people of Latin America due, in large measure, to the warm friendship of Carlos. He is a one of kind teacher and a better person.

My family and I had the privilege to stay with our long-term friend Carlos in Coyote Guanacaste. We enjoyed his hospitality very much as well as the tranquility and uniqueness of the area. With an amazing view overlooking San Miguel beach, The Pacific Learning Center is situated at a unique location not well known to tourists. This offers those who try to master the Spanish language the possibility to study the language in an authentic environment with plenty of opportunity to practice. The people we met were very generous and took their time to get to know us and share their knowledge of the area with us. When walking along the beach I was invited to go beach fishing with one of the local fisherman, other people we met told us where we could see turtles or howler monkeys. As I have known Carlos for quite some time now, I know that he is a great teacher. He is very inspiring and above all creative. As he is aware of the different styles in which people learn, Carlos always looks for the most suitable way for his students to come to grips with the language. A typical class at the PLC (which will certainly not look like a regular lesson at school) will always leave you with a smile on your face. As a family we were really able to unwind and relax at this location. Staying at one of the few Blue Zones on this planet no tiene precio.
